On the Application Areas of Fragmentation Evaporators
The fragmentation evaporator is a purely mechanical atomization device: it breaks wastewater into fine droplets using high-speed rotating blades or atomizing nozzles and sprays them into the air. It is not equipped with a heating system nor does it introduce hot airflows, relying entirely on natural sunlight and wind to accelerate droplet evaporation. Its core advantages—“simple structure, resistance to scaling, maintenance-free operation, and low operating costs”—give it an irreplaceable role in certain wastewater treatment applications.
I. Volume Reduction of High-Salinity Wastewater in Evaporation Ponds
This is the device’s most critical application area. In industries such as petrochemicals, coal chemicals, mining, and power generation, high-salinity wastewater, reverse osmosis concentrate, and desulfurization wastewater are typically discharged into evaporation ponds for natural evaporation. Traditional evaporation ponds require large land areas, and their evaporation efficiency is limited by seasonal variations. The atomizing evaporator is installed on the pond’s water surface or along its banks, atomizing and spraying the wastewater to significantly increase the liquid–gas contact area, thereby multiplying the evaporation rate. A single unit can treat several to over ten cubic meters per hour, with capital and operating costs far lower than those of multi-effect evaporation or mechanical vapor recompression systems, and it avoids fouling of heat transfer surfaces, making it well suited for sites with poor water quality and limited maintenance resources.
II. Expansion of Evaporation Ponds and Emergency Volume Reduction
The pontoon‑type or mobile mounting structure eliminates the need for a fixed foundation, allowing the unit to float directly on the surface of existing evaporation ponds and flexibly accommodate water level fluctuations. For ponds with insufficient capacity or inadequate seasonal evaporation rates, it offers a rapid, civil‑engineering‑free solution for expanding treatment volume, making it particularly suitable for remote mining sites, temporary wastewater management, or emergency volume reduction prior to environmental inspections.
III. Disposal of Landfill Leachate and Similar Concentrates
The concentrate produced after reverse osmosis treatment of landfill leachate has high salinity and poor biodegradability, making conventional treatment costly. A fragmenting evaporator can directly atomize and spray this concentrate into an evaporation pond or designated area, leveraging natural conditions to reduce its volume. As an end-of-pipe volume-reduction tool, it offers clear economic advantages. Similarly, desulfurization wastewater and concentrated mine water can also be reduced in volume using this approach.
IV. Explanation of Scope of Application
It should be clarified that this equipment only achieves “volume reduction” and does not involve solute separation or purification. Atomized droplets may drift under wind influence, so the extent of environmental impact downwind must be monitored, and appropriate containment or site‑selection measures should be implemented. Furthermore, its evaporation capacity is highly dependent on climatic conditions; efficiency declines significantly in cold, humid, or windless periods. Therefore, it should not be used as the sole treatment method but rather in combination with evaporation ponds, solidification, or other processes.
Overall, the application logic of the fragmenting evaporator is clear: any scenario involving large volumes of wastewater that requires volume reduction with minimal energy consumption and maintenance, and where no purity requirements exist for the concentrated product, is well suited to this technology. Clarifying the technical boundary—“purely mechanical atomization, no heat source”—helps ensure it is correctly positioned in engineering selection as an end-of-line volume-reduction tool, rather than as a precision concentration device.
